We've all done the infamous "ego search" on Google. You know, you type in your name and see where you're mentioned online. I hadn't done it in a few years so I was pleasantly surprised with the results I found a few weeks ago.
Of course, if you have a common name, your results are going to be pretty muddled. If you have a very unique name, your results are going to be a little narrow but, obviously, more relevant. If your name is somewhere in the middle (like mine), you find some interesting stuff.
There are actually quite a few Barry Rice's out in the world. What is most compelling to me, though, is how incredibly talented we all are. I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything; I'm just saying I'm in very good company. So, for shits and giggles, I thought I'd take the time to introduce you to a few of my namesakes:
Barry Rice, Designer
This is the only Barry Rice that I had some knowledge of prior to my recent research. A former journalist, this Barry is the owner of the interior design firm Barry Rice Design and Full Circle Modern, a vintage furniture store in Brooklyn.
But Barry is most well-known for being the 20-year partner of current Chopped host and former Queer Eye co-host, Ted Allen. The couple live together in New York and became engaged last June after the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act.
Barry T. Rice, Attorney
This Barry lives not far from me in Edmond, Oklahoma (although I'm almost certain we aren't related). His family has practiced law in downtown Edmond since 1906.
In addition to his career as a probate and estate planning attorney, Mr. Rice also owns several properties in downtown Edmond, and recently announced plans to restore a recently uncovered 1920's rail platform into an open air historical pavilion.
Barry Rice, UT Athletic Department Video Director
This Barry lives in Rogersville, Tennessee and has worked for the University of Tennessee's athletic department for the past 22 years.
He's responsible for editing and compiling video for short segments that are shown on the big screen during UT football games, such as "This is Tennessee."
Barry Rice, Architect
Meet Barry Rice, owner of Barry Rice Architects PLLC, one of New York City's premier architecture firms.
I couldn't find a lot about the man himself, but the firm has handled many multi-million dollar projects in the city, and also does interior design, handling public, private, and institutional clients.
The Amazing Barry, Magician
Although his full name IS Barry Rice, you'll find my compatriot here performing under the stage name, The Amazing Barry.
He lives in Fishers, Indiana, and is a computer programmer by day. At night, he is a working magician and commercial actor.
You can find much more about Barry at his website, amazingbarry.com (duh).
Barry Rice, Soccer Player
Barry Lashawn Rice, Jr., is an American soccer player for the Akron Summit Assault in the USL Premier Development League.
From 2006-2009, he played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The school called him "arguably the best player in program history, and one of the top defenders in the country."
He was also the first player in school history to win C-USA Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection.
I don't know what any of that means, other than "Barry play good kickyball."
Barry Rice, Botanist/Astronomer
This guy is fascinating.
Originally an astronomer, has was a researcher at Steward Observatory and co-authored several books on the astronomy of the Milky Way galaxy.
Now, he's a renowned botanist and author of "Monster Plants" and "Growing Carnivorous Plants." He's also the editor of the International Carnivorous Plant Society's newsletter, The Carnivorous Plant Newsletter. Until 2009, he worked on the Global Invasive Species Team as an invasive species specialist.
As if that weren't impressive enough, he's also a third-degree black belt and plays the didjeridu. And he's a man after my own heart; check out this picture I found:
Barry Rice, Professor Emeritus, Accounting (Retired)
E. Barry Rice was a professor emeritus of accounting and the Director of Instructional Services at Loyola College before his retirement.
I can't tell you much more about him other than he's the one that owns barryrice.com and keeps the rest of us from using it. Kudos to you, good sir!
Well, that's it. I'm sure there are more but those were the ones that came up first. Kind of impressive, no? I've got to say...I'm inspired by these guys. It's like I have a legacy to live up to. They make me want to be a better person and do better things with my life. I know that's probably silly, but it's true.
And, yes, I'm sure somewhere there's a Barry Rice sitting in a trailer smoking meth with his cousin/wife, but if there is, he's not on the internet.
